Oh man, that Fucking show. I remember being profoundly confused by it, because I couldn't really figure out what it has to do with the actual game of D&D

How about "Street Sharks" and "Extreme Dinosaurs"
There was once a street sharks/extreme dinosaurs crossover episode that was pretty epic.
And, for your reference, both of these shows are available for streaming on netflix.

@potatey The best part is that the D&D cartoon actually led in its timeslot for *two years.* I can imagine that as a kid I might have been happy so long as a show had swords and magic and dragons, but damn. A show that bad should never be popular. But I guess that's why we're all here in the first place, isn't it? mannytanner - I totally watched Street Sharks. Recently remembered it, and looked it up on youtube. I couldn't even sit through the theme song, it was so painfully bad.

Heil Honey I'm Home! British spoof of Hitler's homelife. Cancelled after one episode. Although it really wasn't that bad, just offensive to millions of people. How about Ned & Stacey? That was god awful.

The River is one of the worst shows I've ever seen. I'm only still watching it because I heard there were only going to be 8 episodes in the season.
Also, Alcatraz was so bad I couldn't even stick with it for the first season like I'm trying to do with The River.
Both shows make me constantly remember The Sarah Conner Chronicles. A terrible show that I continued to watch hoping one day that it would fix itself.

i just recently watched street sharks on the netflix instant cue (it determines so much of my tv habits...) and was amazed by the low frame rate of the animation. nothing is ever synched up and i'd wager it runs at about 6 frames per second (much less than the standard 24). i like how there were all these cartoons in the 90's that tried to cash in on the success of the ninja turtles. this one was probably the most ridiculous. the freakish protagonists always had human friends but i can't imagine ever hanging out with the street sharks. those guys were fucking terrifying.

Most of these shows were, as you point out, a cash in. You could almost come up with a random generator for the premise. Every few months, roll some dice on some charts, and you've got a show about boys who are aged 15-25 who, for one reason or another, are some form of animal/person hybrid. These animal people are versed in some manner of fighting style, and use it to solve problems.
TMNT, on the other hand, had the benefit of being based on a legitimately gritty comic book with some seriously adult themes.
Though, I defy anyone to actually sit through all the TMNT episodes. Much as I love the show, it's actually pretty awful. Almost every episode is exactly the same.

yeah, tmnt comics were originally a tongue-in-cheek rendition of the current trends in comics. the turtles aspect was kind of a random type of joke but it ended up creating a formula for a whole new kind of kids entertainment. how many rip-offs were there? there were the street sharks and the something dinosaurs (what were they called? they were mentioned earlier on the forum...), the biker mice from mars, the toxic crusaders (were an attempt to turn the troma toxie character into a similar type of cartoon), and i can't think of any others right now. anyone else remember some other ones?

I know I loved it as a kid, but I tried to watch it again recently and couldn't get past the ridiculous opening scene of episode 1.
21 Jump Street.
A group of thugs who look like extras from Michael Jackson's "Bad" video bust in on some rich white people eating dinner and say, "Stay quiet, stay alive." I still use that on my husband when I want him to shut up.

Has no one mentioned Small Wonder yet? Loved it when I was in the first grade and would skip ballet practice to stay home and watch it (kind of hated ballet class anyway). Pretty effing terrible.
